At some point during their schooling, the majority of young people begin to think about the direction they want to take in respect of apprenticeships or university. We believe that the only basis for a sound decision is practical experience. With this in mind, we cooperate, for instance, with schools in Lower Saxony and in Saxony-Anhalt – and have been doing so for more than 20 years in some cases. We give young people practical insight through tours of our sites, practical training days, job application coaching, as well as many other career-oriented activities, and show them the manifold career prospects offered by the Salzgitter Group.
Our partnerships with schools in the locations of Salzgitter, Peine and Ilsenburg are a good example of this.
The "BONA SZ" program was founded in 2008 as a large-scale joint initiative in education for the cooperation of companies in the region with all fourteen general education schools. Its objective is to ensure that enough young people continue to pursue careers in scientific, technical and trade professions. "BONA SZ" supports schoolchildren in the process of selecting their future careers over a period of two years. The grade eight to ten classes participating cover four modules in sequence, each with a different focus:
Modules alternate between theoretical and practical content and offer school students extensive guidance in choosing their future professional life. Other projects running under the "BONA SZ" initiative are the vocational trade fair, the market place of opportunities and the “TechnikTage” (technology days). The vocational trade fair is open to all students schools in the region but especially to those in years nine to eleven. At the trade fair they have the opportunity of talking to representatives from around 50 companies as well as public-sector organizations and of finding out more about trainee programs and everyday working life in the respective company. In the market place of opportunities, school students gain a deeper insight into the various vocational training for the professions in the companies they have selected. The “TechnikTage” are exclusively devoted to the fascination of steel as a material. The students are given a taste of the diverse specialist areas of Salzgitter AG in a number of different locations.
The STEP.ING program targets students in the eleventh grade who are about to take their school leaving examinations. The program offers participants guidance and support in choosing a profession and/or a degree course in engineering or natural sciences. In addition, it paves the way in preparing for their professional future and helps them to get to know more about everyday working life in technical professions. Furthermore, it promotes the developing and strengthening of methods and interpersonal competence and enables networking with the regional universities and for contacts to be established in the participating companies at an early stage.
The Niedersachsen-Technikum runs as a program designed to win young women for the MINT professions (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, technology) and is aimed at female graduates from general and vocational grammar schools. At the same time, the participants also complete practical training at Salzgitter AG and are given a taste of studying engineering at one of the universities involved in the program. They gain an extensive insight into the academic and professional requirements in the domain of engineering. The six-month program therefore also includes working on a relevant project within Salzgitter AG.
Our commitment to universities is aimed at attracting students to the steel industry. The trend toward high-tech products and premium services will result in an even greater need for qualified junior staff in the future. In addition, we direct our endeavors toward intensifying the exchange between the world of business and universities as well as giving the range of learning opportunities stronger practical orientation. We collaborate with many universities and contribute in a variety of ways: We actively participate in designing degree courses, initiate student projects and reward outstanding student performance. Students can choose to complete practical training and to draw on our close support in writing dissertations and theses.
We cooperate with the following universities/universities of applied sciences:
Salzgitter AG wants to attract more women to the company, especially those with a degree in science or engineering. The first women students' day, bearing the title of "Making a Career at Salzgitter AG: Women Engineers in the World of Steel", was held in 2011. The participants were taken on a tour of the Salzgitter steelworks and saw for themselves how steel is produced. Three of our women engineers gave presentations on their careers and talked about their experiences in different areas of their job and on continuous professional development. We organize this event together with "fiMINT", a program for promoting women in Mathematics, Information technology, Natural sciences and Technology. We are also in the process of expanding our spectrum in this area and have joined the National Pact for Women in MINT Careers.
