Green steel for AR Shelving – Grupo Arania

26.05.2023 | Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH

The "Grupo Arania" is a Spanish group of companies operating in the steel processing sector. It was founded in 1940 and is represented at 5 locations worldwide. Salzgitter AG and the Arania Group signed an innovative partnership agreement in June 2022, which guarantees the company a defined tonnage of "green steel" in advance as part of an economic commitment. This "green steel" will be produced and supplied under the SALCOS® - SAlzgitter Low CO2-Steelmaking program. In addition, the two companies intend to jointly drive forward and refine the development of steel grades with a reduced CO₂ footprint.

A subsidiary of the Arania Group is AR Shelving. It produces steel shelving for do-it-yourselfers in Spain and Slovakia. It uses cold-rolled precision strip and hot-dip galvanized sheet from Salzgitter Flachstahl as starting material.
With SALCOS® steel, AR Shelving specifically wants to differentiate itself from competitors using conventionally produced steel. The Low-CO₂ steel grades are produced at the Peine electric steel mill and further processed at the Salzgitter Flachstahl rolling mills. By melting down recycled steel scrap and using climate-friendly energy sources, the hot-rolled material has a 75 percent lower CO₂ footprint than conventional production on the blast furnace route. TÜV SÜD has verified and validated this on the basis of 2018 data for the various process routes used to produce flat steel.

The first coils of the agreed sample quantity have now been delivered to Slovakia. AR Shelving is planning to significantly expand sales in the segment of CO2-reduced racking systems and sees Salzgitter Flachstahl as the suitable partner in this market.
