Salzgitter AG to present SALCOS® on Hydrogen Panel

08.04.2021 | Salzgitter AG

Salzgitter AG will be showcasing SALCOS – the SAlzgitter Low CO2Steelmaking transformation project – at Hannover Messe Digital. SALCOS® is aimed at drastically reducing CO2 emissions by harnessing hydrogen in steel production.

SALCOS® project manager Dr. Alexander Redenius will take part in the “Hydrogen – Opportunity for German industry?” panel on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Dr. Redenius will be outlining the hugely significant role of hydrogen in reducing CO2 emissions and the incremental realigning of steel manufacturing processes.

At present, production in our integrated steelworks in Salzgitter generates around eight million tons of CO2 a year that are unavoidable within the context of the existing processes, the current status of technical conditions and the available facilities. With the aim of reducing these CO2 emissions, Salzgitter AG developed the SALCOS® concept in a joint collaboration with partners back in 2015, thereby charting a new course and deploying innovative process technologies. The initial concrete steps have already been taken in the form of setting up wind power plants and electrolyzers on location.

The SALCOS® concept encompasses hydrogen generation and the conversion of blast furnace-based steel production to direct reduction – initially harnessing natural gas, with the share of hydrogen ramped up. Upon complete conversion to direct reduction plants, hydrogen will fully replace the carbon currently necessary to produce steel, while lowering CO2 emissions by more than 95 %. With its objective of directly avoiding CO2 – Carbon Direct Avoidance Strategy – SALCOS® is sustainable and exemplary in the sector.
