Salzgitter Group at Blechexpo Trade Fair: focus on low CO2 steel

Customers from a range of different sectors are already sourcing our green strip steel

The Salzgitter Group will be represented by several subsidiaries at this year’s Blechexpo 2021 that will be taking place from October 26 through to 29, 2021 in Stuttgart. The main emphasis of Salzgitter’s trade fair presentation in Hall 10, Stand 413 will be placed on “green strip steel.”

Salzgitter/Stuttgart – Salzgitter AG is already supplying green strip steel products with a CO2 footprint reduced by more than 66% to the manufacturing operations of prestigious customers from various sectors, such as the automotive and household appliance industries for instance. As Dr. Sebastian Bross, Managing Director of Sales at Salzgitter Flachstahl and member of the Group Management Board commented: “For customers it is important to source steel products from us where CO2 has already been effectively reduced, as this helps them in achieving their ambitious sustainability goals. For Salzgitter AG as well, expanding its product portfolio in this way represents a significant component of the decarbonization strategy.”

The low CO2 steel grades are produced in Peine’s mini mill and processed further in the rolling mills and the galvanizing plants in Salzgitter. When steel scrap is melted, the CO2 footprint of the galvanized material is 66 percent lower compared with the conventional production of steel via the blast furnace route. This achievement has been verified by TÜV SÜD (German technical inspectorate) based on data from 2018 on the various process routes.

A further focus at the trade fair is the SALCOS - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking project that has positioned Salzgitter AG as a pioneer the sector: Hydrogen and power from renewable sources replaces the carbon formerly required by steel production, thereby lowering the CO2 emissions in steel production by more than 95 percent.

Salzgitter AG is working together with partners from industry and research on this challenging goal, with the aim of launching hydrogen-based steel production already by the end of 2025.

The subsidiaries Salzgitter Flachstahl, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung, Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlhandel and Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice will all be represented at the trade fair stand.
