Young people and politicians enthuse about Salzgitter AG at IdeenExpo 2019 and the company’s forward-looking concept for low CO2 steel production

Salzgitter AG was once again one of the main sponsors of IdeenExpo 2019 in Hanover that ended yesterday and was visited by more than 360,000 young people over a nine-day period. For the steel group based in Lower Saxony “the biggest and most exciting classroom in the world” is an excellent communication platform for inspiring school children for technology and natural sciences and for showcasing the many facets of the fascinating topics associated with steel as an innovative material.

As Michael Kieckbusch, the Group’s Chief Personnel Officer and Labor Relations Director stated: "IdeenExpo ideally compliments and reinforces our long-standing activities to awaken the interest of school children in careers in commercial and technical fields. The big rush of schoolchildren on our exhibits showed once again that the diverse activities of a conventional industrial enterprise can still be extremely interesting for young people today.

We were particularly delighted to welcome Minister President Stephan Weil and Anja Karliczek, Federal Minister of Education and Research, at our booth during the opening tour. They were very enthusiastic when we presented our SALCOS® project (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) in a virtual 3-D environment for an exciting future of low CO2steel production at Salzgitter AG.”

The name SALCOS® stands for our innovative, technological concept. At the heart of the concept is the aim of incrementally replacing the carbon used in steel production by hydrogen. This hydrogen is to be produced using electricity from renewable sources of energy. Thanks to extremely advanced, specific planning, it may be possible to have achieved a 25 % reduction in CO2 emissions by 2025. Once the existing complex facilities have been completely converted, reducing CO2 by 95 % may even be possible by 2050.

Along with enthusiasm for the virtual and digital exhibits as well as the dancing Salzgitter AG robots from the 3-D printer, young people were also interested in the traditional ways of working with steel as a material. From the rose of steel that school children were able to make themselves at workbenches under expert instruction by Salzgitter AG trainees a total of 4,000 roses were taken home.

With its booth at IdeenExpo 2019, Salzgitter AG was once again able to demonstrate to young people that the company and its products combine sustainability, tradition and a focus on the future in an outstanding manner.
