begin transporting gas from Azerbaijan from the Greece-Turkey border to Italy staring in 2020.  e order for the onshore section comprises 270 km of large-diame- ter pipes and 1,559 pipe bends with a total tonnage of some 170,000 t; the order for the 110-km long o shore section includes more than 71,000 t of large-diameter pipes in the 36-inch size.
 e pipes will be produced by EURO- PIPE and the pipe bends will be produced by Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech and bent in the pipe-bending mill in Mül- heim (North Rhine-Westphalia). Some
50 employees have been working there around the clock since November 2015 in order to process the largest order in the company’s 30-year history.  e produc- tion of the 1,550 pipe bends ensures the plant’s utilization until early 2017.
According to Elke Muthmann, works manager of the pipe bending plant, a crucial reason for the contract award was, “that we could o er a group solution, in- cluding production and coordination.  e customer understands the importance

 e pipes are shipped with bulk carriers
such as the “Red Jacket”, which is loaded
in the port of Brake in northern Germa-
ny. Ships will be leaving the port with
pipes and pipe bends routinely until May
2017. “ e destinations are four ports in
Albania, Greece, and Italy,” says Ste en
Hillig from Salzgitter Mannesmann Inter-
national (SMID). “From there, the pipes
will be driven overland to the particular

construction sites.“ Hillig is responsible for the transport from the port in Brake and routinely travels to the destination ports in order to check the condition of the pipes a er their two-week journey through the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Because the coating and edges of the pipe end pieces are very delicate, each ship is loaded to only a third of its capacity just to be on the safe side.
