Many construction sites, such as the Amag-
er Bakke power plant (see page 62), herald the architects’ courage as they risk taking chances. In Malmö, one searches in vain for the tourist  ow seen in the very beautiful Nyhavn (“New Har- bor”) and the hustle and bustle around the Little Mermaid.
Malmö is di erent. Even the distances are short- er. It is a 20-minute amble through the pedestrian zone from the Triangeln train station to the Gamla Kyrkogården (“Old Church Garden”) with its old but well-kept graves and  nally to the Kungspark- en (King’s Park). Malmöhus, with its huge round towers, catches the eye. Today the castle is a museum. From here, another 15-minute walk take the visitor to Västra Hamnen (“West Harbor”).  e walk could be done more quickly, but the city’s leisurely pace is contagious. Cars roll through the streets at 20 to 25 mph, but it any case it is the bicycles that domi- nate.
A few sailboats moored on the Sundsprome- naden are the only indication that the Västra Ham- nen is a harbor.  e area was a depressing sight a er the Kockums shipyard closed in the eighties, but in 2000 the area began to evolve into a quarter
