The longest journey
The space probe Voyager 1 is the most dis- tant man-made object from Earth. Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977 and left our solar system for interstellar space in August 2012. Although the probe was mainly made of aluminum, several steel objects are on board on this journey to infinity. A thermo- electric radioisotope generator made of
steel and titanium is installed on the probe, while steel alloy and gold foil plating protect it against the exhaust gas of the propulsion system. Voyager 1 is now some 21.4 billion kilometers from Earth – the longest jour- ney that a man-made piece of steel has ever undertaken.
