KHS celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2018 How an equipment retailer in Dortmund grew into a global full-service provider
TECHNOLOGY On October 1, 1868, Carl Kappert and Louis Holstein founded the equipment retailer “Holstein & Kappert” in Dortmund. This laid the foundations of today’s KHS. The decades that followed were shaped by expan-
sion, mergers and the development of ground-breaking products. Holstein & Kappert initially sold technical devices for the beverage industry. At the beginning
of the 20th century, the company started producing its own machines. The compa- nies Seitz-Werke and Enzinger enjoyed similar success in the second half of the 19th century.
Their innovative filters revolution- ized the wine and beer industry. Under the umbrella of Klöckner-Werke, Seitz Enzinger Noll Maschinenbau (SEN) AG with locations in Bad Kreuznach and Worms merged with Holstein & Kappert to become KHS Maschinen- und Anla- genbau AG in 1993. Despite the merger and insolvency of Klöckner-Werke at the start of the 1990s, KHS was able to develop into a full-service provider for the beverage, food and non-food indus-

tries in the years that followed. Another key factor in the company’s success was the global alignment of the business from an early stage. Today, KHS is operating production sites in the USA, Mexico,
Brazil, India and China in addition to the five plants in Germany. Moreover, the company is represented by a sales and service network in all relevant markets worldwide.
Third largest order in company history
Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH supplies pipeline pipes for the ZEELINK natural gas pipeline
MANNESMANN The order encompasses approximately 215 kilome- ters of gas pipeline tubes with a diameter of 1,016 mm (DN 1000), making it the third-largest project in the history of the large-diameter tube plant in Salzgitter. The polyehylene-coated tube sections are
around 18 meters long and weigh up to 8 tons. The ZEELINK project company is
a joint venture set up by Open Grid Eu- rope GmbH (OGE, 75 percent share) and Thyssengas GmbH (25 percent), while OGE is responsible for planning and con- structing the pipeline. The project, which
is to be completed by March 2021, en- compasses the construction of a new gas pipeline from the Belgian-German border near Lichtenbusch to Legden near Ahaus in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the construction of a compressor station in the Aachen area.
