 Somewhere in IVceland
ikings are generally considered steely folk, though their boats were most definitely made of wood. But not this one. This sculpted
vessel has an eye-catching stainless steel structure and was christened Sólfar, meaning “journey to the sun”, as it was originally intended to face the sunset. Unfortunately, the planners clearly lacked a compass, as it now bears north from its shore-side mooring in Reykjavík. The artist Jón Gunnar Árnason (1931– 1989), who created the sculpture in 1986, wasn’t par- ticularly bothered. Vikings are rarely oversensitive.
