Siemens supplies Salzgitter Flachstahl with a PEM electrolysis plant
alzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG) award- Hydrogen has long played a key role as a qual- ed the contract for the construction of a ity-enhancing factor in the annealing processes 2.2 megawatt PEM electrolysis plant (PEM used in steel production. It is currently supplied

hydrogen-based steel production. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in the fourth quar- ter of 2020 and meet all SZFG's current hydrogen needs. The electricity required for this purpose will be generated by seven wind power plants with a capacity of 30 MW: these are under construction by Avacon AG on the Salzgitter Group premises and will likewise go online from 2020 onwards.
Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, Salzgitter AG CEO: “We’re proud to be pioneers in the industrial, mass-scale use of hydrogen in the steel industry. As demonstrated by our SALCOS® project, we have the technological capabilities to achieve significant CO2 reductions. The “Wind Hydrogen Salzgitter” project is a key building block along the way to more climate-friendly steel produc- tion. It is now up to policymakers to lay down the right framework conditions for transformation
to a low carbon industry”. The cost of the entire project – construction of the wind turbines and the hydrogen plants, including their integration into the existing line networks – amounts to some EUR 50 million.
In Salzgitter, a containerized plant is being built that will produce 400 Nm3 of hydrogen when op- erating at full capacity. PEM technology is ideally suited to absorbing volatile wind and solar power. The plants’ highly dynamic operating mode en- ables them to respond to the demands of a rapidly fluctuating power grid.
Gabriele Schmiedel, Executive Vice President Hydrogen Solutions at Siemens Gas and Power: “Reducing CO2 in all industries is the key chal- lenge in terms of meeting medium and long-term climate targets. Renewable power generation and innovative technologies such as green hydrogen production harnessing electrolysis are essential building blocks here. We’re delighted to have joined forces with Salzgitter Flachstahl to advance the use of green hydrogen in the steel industry.”
