 An icon of steel
The Eiffel Tower was completed 130 years ago after
a construction period of three years. At the time, the structure epitomized progress and the art of engineering with its 7,500 tons of steel. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel,
the architect it was named after, called the 312-meter tower a “symbol of the industrial century.” Nowadays
it appears on virtually every tourist souvenir. The
years, however, have left their mark: the steel regularly requires a new coat of paint, involving 60 tons of paint and 15 months of work. The time is coming around again: the Eiffel Tower started showing visible signs of rust in 2019.
