industry in the process.
The aim of the project is to generate hydrogen in Salzgitter harnessing electrolysis and electricity from wind power. This is intended to create an important foundation for the future use of larger hydrogen volumes to reduce direct CO2 emissions in steel production.
Salzgitter Flachstahl is planning the construction and operation of a PEM electrolysis plant (PEM
= Proton Exchange Membrane) with a capacity of around 400 Nm3/h. Avacon intends to build and operate seven wind turbines with a 30-megawatt capacity on Salzgitter Group grounds, three of which will be erected on the area surrounding the steel mill. Linde, an industrial gas supplier, will
funding is also required to finance this pioneer- ing, forward-looking industrial climate protec- tion project. If everything proceeds as planned, hydrogen production on the plant site could begin in 2020.
As part of this project, the partners are striving to build up their knowledge of environmentally- compatible hydrogen production. Moreover, they will gain experience of the on-site production of hydrogen, as well as its use within an integrated iron and steel works, including all of the complex production processes that this entails.
Hydrogen supplied by Linde is already being utilized in the annealing processes of steel produc- tion. Above and beyond this, the use of hydrogen in steel mills has the potential to substantially reduce the CO2 emissions resulting from steel production processes.Salzgitter AG drew up the SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) project in order to achieve this goal.
