New heat treatment line as part of new major
investment in Ilsenburg
The all-new heat treatment line marks the largest single investment at the Salzgitter AG subsidiary in company history
PLATE/SECTION STEEL Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG), a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, has now launched the “Neue Wärmebehandlungslinie” project (“New heat treatment line”). Commissioning is earmarked for the start
of 2020. More than € 150 million are being invested in the project, making it the largest single investment at the site to date. The energy-efficient heat treatment line meets the highest standards in terms of quality and flatness demands.
The integrated MultiFlex-Quench® enables the production of a broad product portfolio, including particularly challenging heavy plate grades thanks to extremely sophisticated cooling strate-
gies. The range of materials includes high-strength carbon steels, wear-resistant steels, nickel alloy steels, steels for offshore wind turbine construction, steel grades for pressure tank construction as well as case-hardening and heat-treated steels.
Since the takeover of the site in 1992, the Salzgitter Group has invested more than € 200 million in Ilsenburg.
Closing the loop with BMW
Salzgitter AG is enhancing sustainability thanks to a closed material loop
The BMW Group and Salzgitter project team concluding the project in Leipzig
STRIP STEEL Since November 2017, Salzgitter Flachstahl has been sup- plying the BMW Group pressing plant in Leipzig with steel strip (coils). On
the return journey, the special transport truck carries all the scrap from the press- ing plant back to Salzgitter – creating a doubly efficient closed loop.
On the one hand, the trucks’ capacity is always utilized and CO2 is therefore kept to a minimum. On the other, the

recycling of the steel scrap effectively closes the material loop. With this closed loop system, Salzgitter Flachstahl is now supplying an automobile plant directly and on a just-in-time basis for the first time.
The solution dispenses with the
need for a consignment warehouse,
as is normally the case. In place of the precisely timed weekly deliveries to the warehouse, the coils are now supplied to
the BMW Group production facilities on the day after a request is placed – deliv- ered within a specific half-hour window. BMW Group are able to view the stock levels in Salzgitter online. The electroni- cally transmitted requests are translated completely automatically by Salzgitter into transport orders dispatched to the logistics team within a matter of min- utes. A monitoring system guarantees that orders cannot be overlooked.
