The TPE process (Three-Roll Piercing Elongation) is the foundation of the first worldwide unified plant combination of a push bench and a three-roll rotary piercing mill
Anniversary of
TPE process
Innovation was developed at Mannesmannröhren-Werk in Zeithain
MANNESMANN Ten years ago, a three-roll rotary piercing mill was combined with a push bench for the first time ever in Zeithain. This was because the previous method with piercing press and elongator was no longer able to meet modern requirements and satisfy the increasing quality standards and higher production volumes. Consequently, the Zeithain engineers devel- oped a new process in Riesa. Drawing on technical
and technological support provided by SMS, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung and the Association for the Promotion of Forming and Production Technology (VFUP), they adapted the three-roll piercer for use with a push bench, incorporating the existing elongator. Punching elongation then became three-roll piercing elongation (TPE).
After start-up problems in 2008 and the 2008/2009 steel crisis, the efficiency of the Zeithain rolling mill was demonstrated for the first time during the first few months of 2011. As a result of this innovative concept, production capacity was boosted from 170,000 to some 200,000 tons per year.

SZFG is set to benefit from digital railway upgrade DB Cargo is to equip its entire fleet of freight wagons with telematics
FLACHSTAHL DB Cargo plans to equip its approximately 68,000 freight wagons in Germany with GPS and digital sensor technology by 2020. This will en- able them to use mobile communications to send signals during travel as well as at start, stop or impact, for example. The signals provide useful feedback on load status, temperature, humidity and move- ment of sensitive loads. Salzgitter Flach- stahl GmbH depends on efficient logistics processes, and the ‘intelligent freight wagon’ will close all the digital gaps in rail transport. Forecasts and assumptions can be enriched and enhanced based on the newly acquired data.
