New coil binding line
Significant improvements in work and process safety in the area of coiler and coil logistics
STRIP STEEL The new Coil Binding Line 2 at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH will reprocess, sample and pack for shipment some 660,000 tons of hot-rolled strip per year. The new line meets all customer requirements for processing and validating coils of high- strength steel grades. The new binding strip type can absorb higher tensile forces, while two expanding mandrels and several pressure rollers prevent coils of high-strength grades from cracking, and the width of the shears has also been increased. This means that in future it will be possible to sample the entire range of products and dimensions handled on the hot-rolled strip line.

 Optimized HFI welding
Improvement in the quality and production process of HFI steel tubes
MANNESMANN High-fre- quency induction (HFI) welding has proved highly effective on longitudinally welded steel pipes made by Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH. Increasingly rigorous safety require- ments in the handling of fossil fuels and transporting new media call for a further improved HFI longitudinal weld, however.
For this reason, process experts at Mannesmann Line Pipe joined forces with the materials specialists from Salzgitter
Mannesmann Forschung GmbH to develop high-resolution observation and measuring methods. These will enable more effective analysis and understanding of the electro- thermal and materials engineering processes that occur in high-frequency welding. Based on new findings in terms of the connections between the process data and the mechanical parameters of the HFI seam, the aim is to optimize the process and improve quality in the HFI steel pipes.

Over the Alps with lock, stock and barrel Teamwork between various Group companies resulted in an order from Italy
MANNESMANN The project department at Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH was able to secure
an order in partnership with the Salzgit- ter Mannesmann Grobblech GmbH pipe bending plant and Mannesmann Gross- rohr GmbH: At total of 66 bends and almost 15,000 tons of spiral-welded pipes in diameters of 36”, 42” and 56” for the Italian natural gas pipeline operator Snam S.p.A. MGB rolled the plate for the bend pre-pipes, while EUROPIPE manufac- tured the finished products at its Mülheim plant. The UP longitudinal seam-welded pipes were bent on the inductive bending plant. The bends and most of the pipes are destined for infrastructure projects as part of the Italian gas network.
