Low carbon steel for Arania

The Arania Group was founded in 1940 and is a steel processing group with 5 locations worldwide. It produces high and low carbon precision cold rolled strip and micro-alloyed steels.
One of ARANIA's strengths is the integration of each customer's requirements into its manufacturing and management process, in order to achieve the highest quality and reliability throughout the value chain. In this sense, Arania is working with a high commitment to sustainability and the environment to reduce its environmental footprint in terms of CO₂ emissions.
As a result of the work already implemented, Arania has now received the first hot-rolled coils whose starting material comes from Salzgitter's new SALCOS® program, contributing to a reduction in emissions compared to conventionally produced hot-rolled coils.
The low CO₂ steel grades are produced at the Peine electric steel plant and further processed at Salzgitter Flachstahl's rolling mills. By melting down recycled steel scrap and using climate-friendly energy sources, the hot-rolled material has a 71 percent lower CO₂ footprint than conventional production on the blast furnace route. This has been verified and validated by TÜV SÜD based on 2018 data for the various process routes used to produce flat steel.
Phillip Meiser, Sales Director of Salzgitter Flachstahl, commented: "For a large number of our customers, it is important to obtain a product that is physically real and not merely CO₂-reduced via more or less theoretical balance sheet considerations, and in this sense I am particularly pleased that Arania is the first Spanish customer to also take this approach."
For his part, Carmelo Bilbao, vice president of GRUPO ARANIA, has pointed out that "decarbonization will make a great contribution to the good of humanity, which we are happy to start today with the help of one of the European leaders in steel production."
