A virtual tour of integrated steelworks at the Hanover Trade Fair

In a world premiere, the Salzgitter Group is presenting a tour of the CO2-low steel production of the future at the Hanover Trade Fair. The technical revolution and the ensuing changes in the plant configuration of the integrated steelworks in Salzgitter can be experienced by way of virtual reality.

With its presence at the Hanover Trade Fair, Salzgitter Group (Hall 5, Stand A06) is also consistently moving in the direction of presenting its contributions to the topics covered by Industry 4.0 and renewable energies.

A key area is the SALCOS® (SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) project that is based on the direct avoidance of CO2 through innovative steel production harnessing hydrogen and renewable electrical energy. In a cave (room for projecting virtual reality) visitors can experience the future-oriented and ground-breaking conversion of the integrated steelworks for themselves: the construction of new electrolysis systems for producing hydrogen, a direct reduction plant more than 100 meters high as well as an electric arc furnace. Together with its technology partners, the Salzgitter Group is the first company able to show this form of presenting a real works topography and actual construction data as virtual reality.

A further highlight of this year’s trade fair presence is the showcasing of the Salzgitter Group’s currently largest investment undertaking. A new heat treatment line is being installed at Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH for more than € 150 million. This line meets the highest demands on quality and energy efficiency and enables the production of an extensive product portfolio, including particularly sophisticated heavy plate grades. Heavy plate is an important material in the construction of wind turbines, among other applications – both on and offshore.

International trading with the versatile steel products of the Salzgitter Group has long since arrived in the digital world. Salzgitter Mannesmann Handel is a pioneer here with its e-WORLD solution, offering customers an array of different cooperation modules, depending on volume and the degree of cooperation. Among other exhibits, e-AUCTION, providing the option of bidding for steel products, will also be presented.
