Sustainability with responsibility: our SDG statement

As a responsible company, we use the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a compass for our actions. The values anchored in these goals guide and motivate us to make a positive contribution to a sustainable future. We focus in particular on the goals where we have the greatest impact: SDGs 7, 8, 9, 12 and 13.

SDG 7

Affordable and clean energy

We are driving forward the transition to low-carbon steel production and focusing on clean energies. By 2030, 100% of the Group's external electricity requirements are to come from renewable sources, including through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).

SDG 8

Decent work and economic growth

We create a safe and healthy working environment. Health and occupational safety are fundamental values that are actively practised within the Salzgitter Group. By 2030, the number of accidents is to be reduced by at least 50% compared to 2021.

SDG 9

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Our technological transformation to low-carbon steel production is a prime example of innovation and the development of a sustainable infrastructure. The SALCOS® transformation programme aims to convert the Salzgitter site to low-carbon crude steel production by 2033.

SDG 12

Responsible consumption and production

We promote circular economy and the efficient use of resources to minimise the environmental impact of our production. One example of this is the extensive use of scrap in our steel production, which allows us to recycle valuable raw materials and protect primary resources. Our goal is to increase scrap recycling by 50% by 2030.

SDG 13

Climate action

Climate protection is an essential part of our Group strategy and forms the basis of our efforts to reduce negative impacts on climate change. As one of the first steel producers, Salzgitter AG is on the 1.5-degree path of the Paris Climate Agreement with validated targets in accordance with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
