The companies of the Mannesmann business unit, combined under and headed by Mannesmannröhren-Werke GmbH, offer its customers a wide range of steel tubes and pipes.
The steel tube production companies in the Salzgitter Group are all pooled within the Mannesmann business unit. The core of this business unit is formed by Mannesmannröhren-Werke, which has belonged to the Salzgitter Group since 2000. Its history stretches back to 1886 when the Mannesmann brothers rolled the world’s first seamless steel tubes. In the 130 years since, the Mannesmann brand has been internationally synonymous with tubes of the highest quality.
Three product segments offer a broad range of tube products for a variety of applications – from injection systems, power plants and boilers, through to large-volume pipelines.
The companies from the line pipes product segment produce pipes for transporting substances, particularly oil and gas. The EUROPIPE Group, a joint venture between Salzgitter AG and der AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke, is the key element of this business area. EUROPIPE is world market leader in longitudinal-welded large-diameter pipes in the high-quality segment. At one of the world’s most efficient pipe plants at the company headquarters in Mülheim an der Ruhr, the company produces up to 1 million tons of steel pipes every year. Pipes from EUROPIPE Mülheim are used in the world’s most demanding pipeline projects, such as the Langeled Pipeline through the North Sea, the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.
Other companies in the EUROPIPE Group include US-based Berg Steel Pipe Corporation in Panama City, Florida and Berg Spiral Pipe Corporation in Mobile, Alabama. These firms produce up to 500,000 tons of high-quality pipeline pipes per year from hot rolled strip and heavy plate, primarily for the American market.
The line pipes product segment also includes the companies Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH (MLP), based in Hamm and Siegen, and Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH (MGR) in Salzgitter. While MGR produces up to 200,000 tons of spiral-welded large-diameter pipes per year up to 24 inches in diameter for pipeline construction, MLP ranks as a leading specialist in longitudinal-welded tubes manufactured by way of the high frequency induction process for a variety of different applications. MLP tubes with a diameter of between four and 24 inches are used for oil, gas and water pipes, in steel construction as well as in oilfields.
The second pillar of business in the Mannesmann business unit is the precision pipes product segment. The Mannesmann Precision Tubes Group is the European market leader in this field with plants in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Mexico. The Group boasts an annual capacity of around 300,000 tons of seamless and welded tubes. Precision pipes – steel tubes with a small diameter and an extremely high dimensional precision – are primarily utilized in automotive and mechanical engineering, as well as in the energy sector, and are employed in common rail injection systems, drive and hydraulics systems or in boiler construction.
The product portfolio of the Mannesmann business unit is rounded out by the seamless stainless steel tubes sector. Mannesmann Stainless Tubes Group (MST) produces around 30,000 tons of seamless stainless steel and nickel-based alloy pipes a year in Germany, France, Italy and the USA. Stainless steel offers material-related advantages in terms of resistance to corrosion and heat compared to normal carbon steel. As a result, MST Group products are mostly used in power plant construction as well as in the chemicals and petro-chemicals industries.
The business unit holds a 30-percent participation in Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH – a state-of-the-art iron and steel works with an annual capacity of more than 5 million tons of crude steel in Duisburg – and can therefore draw on its own supply of pre-material. The plate and strip steel required for tube production is largely supplied by companies from the Strip Steel as well as Plate/Section Steel business unit.
It is only possible to ensure consistent high quality by controlling the entire value creation chain from the iron through to the completed tubes – and this is an essential prerequisite for realizing our customers’ demanding projects and delivering on the standards set by Mannesmann for 130 years.
