FEhS Building Materials Institute to coordinate “DRI-EOS” research project

Duisburg/Salzgitter. Pursuing its SALCOS® program, Salzgitter AG is pioneering low-CO2 steel production and is now playing a leading role in decarbonization.

The new low-CO2 process which involves the direct reduction of iron ore (DRI) followed by smelting in an electric arc furnace (EAF) results in a different type of slag which must be modified accordingly in order to continue to be of use as a valuable and sustainable raw material.

How the new type of electric arc furnace slag (EOS) can be used in future, especially in the cement industry, as a CO2-saving clinker replacement instead of the granulated blast furnace slag currently employed, is the subject of the “DRI-EOS” research project that has just been launched. The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and coordinated by the FEhS Building Materials Institute. The other project partners are Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (SZMF), the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Friedrich Rohstoffe GmbH, Holcim Deutschland GmbH and LOI Thermprocess GmbH. The project is expected to run for four years.

Ulrich Grethe, head of steel production at Salzgitter AG, regards the project, which is headed up for Salzgitter by the research company Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH, as making an important contribution towards orienting the Salzgitter Group toward the circular economy: “We intend to use the results of the project to support us in ensuring that the finite resources consumed in the production of steel in future continue to be applied as effectively as possible on the principle of circularity in a manner that minimizes the employment of additional resources.”

For Thomas Reiche, too, as Managing Director of the FEhS Institute, the research project represents another important contribution to the sustainable circular economy: “The second part of the current World Climate Report that was recently published shows that we must intensify our research now in order to employ innovative technologies to further reduce CO2 emissions while at the same time strengthening the economy! With “DRI-EOS”, together with our partners we are aiming to put in place the conditions necessary to allow the high-value byproducts of the steel industry to continue to be used in future as resource-conserving low-CO2 building materials in the cement and concrete industry.”

About the FEhS Building Materials Institute

The FEhS – Institut für Baustoff-Forschung e.V. has for over seven years ranked as the first address in Europe for research, testing and consulting in terms of ferrous slag, construction materials and fertilizers. As a modern service provider, our experts with their seven laboratories, the Construction Competence Forum and a network of industry associations, authorities, standardization bodies and science and research institutions together position us a desirable partner for our member companies and customers from around the world.

About SZMF

Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH (SZMF) bundles the central research activities of the Salzgitter Group. SZMF combines a wealth of knowledge and long years of experience in application-oriented research projects in areas such as the efficient use of resources in the production of steel.
