Salzgitter Group putting PV PPA and on-site battery storage system up for tender

  • Energy supply for low-CO2 steel production is further secured
  • Tender for PPA and battery storage starts on June 03, 2025

The Salzgitter Group is now taking the next step towards green steel production: The Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG) subsidiary is inviting tenders for the supply of electricity from ground-mounted photovoltaic systems as part of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), as well as for the construction and operation of a large-scale on-site battery storage system serving the Salzgitter steel location.

SZFG has already concluded extensive PPAs for the implementation of the first expansion stage of the SALCOS® program and is now aiming to close the remaining gap. Interested companies can sign up for the tender for 150 MWp photovoltaic PPAs until June 22, 2025. You can register here and will then receive all the necessary information and documents.

In order to harmonize the fluctuating energy generation of renewable energies with continuous steel production, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is looking for a partner by way of an additional tender to take responsibility for the investment, construction and operation of a battery storage system on the steelworks site. This system is to be utilized proportionately by the partner and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

Further details and the option to sign up by June 22, 2025. Interested companies can access more information here.

The first expansion phase of this transformation is to incrementally convert primary steel production at the Salzgitter integrated steelworks to low-CO2 crude steel production. Within the context of the transformation, the existing carbon-based production process will be replaced by a new steel production route based on renewable energies. Once this technological transition has been completed, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH will be able to eliminate around 95 percent of its direct CO2 emissions.

With the current tender for a photovoltaic PPA and an on-site battery storage system now underway, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH is underlining its commitment to a sustainable future for the steel industry and making significant contributions to achieving climate targets.
