The Strip Steel business unit is composed of the operating companies of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, Salzgitter Bauelemente GmbH, Salzgitter Europlatinen GmbH and Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice GmbH.
The Strip Steel Business Unit produces, processes and sells strip steel in a wide variety of metallurgic compositions and dimensions.
The largest company in the business unit is Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG) ,which operates one of the most state-of-the-art and environmentally-friendly integrated iron and steel works on the planet at its Salzgitter site. The facility produces almost 5 million tons of crude steel as well as around 3.5 million tons of rolled steel every year. The unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions generated in making steel from iron ore have been reduced down to near the technical minimum possible for this process, and substantially undercut the emissions of non-European competitors. The gases released during the production processes are captured for use in the company’s own power plant, among other applications. As a result, the site covers its electricity requirements almost entirely in house and impresses with excellent energy efficiency.
Sustainability is a key element of our philosophy. SZFG has been repeatedly acknowledged by the German Energy Agency (dena) in recent years for its energy efficiency. This included winning the “Energy Efficiency Award” in 2013 and being awarded the “Best Practice Label” for energy-efficient pig iron production in 2014.
Our systems technology enables us to achieve the most minute tolerances in metallurgic compositions as well as dimensions – essential prerequisites for producing steels of the highest quality. In order to achieve this, we make targeted and continuous investments in our plant technology. Our strip steel is therefore ideally suited for tackling the most challenging applications across a range of customer sectors. The company’s iron and steel works is one of the most efficient production sites in the European hot rolled strip sector and is one of only a handful of steel producers that can provide sheet in automobile body quality.
Over 65 % of SZFG’s sales stem from the automobile sector – not just automobile manufacturers but also suppliers, cold rollers as well as steel service centers. Another 20 % of the company’s products are purchased by industrial companies (e.g. household device producers and the mechanical engineering). The 8 % supplied to the tube industry is also of vital importance – from large-diameter pipes through to pipes for fuel injection systems. Approximately 3 % is supplied to the construction sector (roofing and walls). Within the Group, SZFG also supplies the plants within the Plate / Section Steel Business Unit with around 900,000 tons of slabs per year.
SZFG is a series supplier and development partner to technology leaders in its target segments. We strive to be leading innovators for steel products in the automobile chassis and bodywork sector as well as for cold rolling and household devices. In order to achieve and defend this position, we are committed to an intensive research and development cooperation program with Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH as well as other partners within the industrial and academic arena.
One particular strength of the Strip Steel Business Unit is its high level of flexibility and the capacity to make rapid decisions in response to changes in customer demands. The flat hierarchies allow rapid and targeted processes – often in direct coordination with customers.
A portion of the strip steel volume produced in Salzgitter is processed by companies from within the business unit. Salzgitter Europlatinen GmbH, for instance, produces laser-welded blanks from various strip steel grades (tailored blanks) for the automobile industry, while Salzgitter Bauelemente GmbH makes profiled sheets and sandwich components for the construction industry.
The Strip Steel Business Unit is rounded out by the two steel service centers belonging to Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlservice GmbH in Schwerte and Karlsruhe, offering comprehensive pre-processing options and a processing capacity of more than 600,000 tons per year. The branch offices in Nuremberg and Fellbach ensure the availability of service for customers nationwide.
